‘The techs reckon, it’s a Honda X-ADV,’ Harry Bainbridge informed Julie, as they looked through the various photos of the bikes used in the two acid attacks and Driver’s killing, ‘They are pretty certain it’s the same type of bike used in the acid attacks. However, the one of the bike we think Driver’s killer used to get away on, they are less certain about, as the CCTV picture quality isn’t good enough, but it’s a possible match.’

‘Great,’ Julie didn’t sound confident about the task she’d set herself. All the normal searches of stolen bikes and local owners hadn’t produced anything of use, or to be more accurate had highlighted many dozens of possibilities, most of which they couldn’t even start to eliminate. ‘There’s been no abandoned vehicles found that match the general description so in all likelihood it’s being kept somewhere.’

‘With the false plates they could be using the bike every day and simply changing the number when they need to use it for the attacks. I checked with Duncan and none of those we’ve interviewed own an X-ADV, only two ride Hondas and they have alibis.’ Harry was equally despondent at their chances, but was trying to think of something positive to add. ‘The oil stains found on the orange rope, from the back of Driver’s SUV, is motor oil, one that’s commonly used on bikes.’

‘As well as some cars, outboard motors and even petrol mowers,’ Julie pointed out. ‘No, I think our best course is to focus on firms that supply the materials to make number plates with. It will have been a small order so we might have a chance to trace someone who has bought stuff. If that doesn’t produce any results, then we’ll try every stockist in as wide a vicinity as we can cope with and check on thefts. Ray’s having a list drawn up of places reporting a theft that remains unsolved. Right, we should get started.’

‘Err … Before you do, just wanted to say congrats on the engagement,’ Harry had held back congratulating Julie earlier, wanting to speak to her in person.

‘Thanks, I’m more excited about it than I would have thought,’ Julie admitted, she’d been so wrapped up in enjoying the now with Yvette, she’d never given any thought to how their future might pan out but marriage seemed a natural step for them.

‘It’s good you can be so open about such things,’ Harry said, determined to take the opportunity.

‘Getting married isn’t that big a deal,’ Julie laughed, ‘well, mine is of course. My engagement is a life shattering revelation.’ She couldn’t resist flashing the ring once more, wiggling her fingers so it caught the light.

‘No I mean …’ Harry’s resolution was faltering, his voice becoming nervous.

‘What?’ Julie decided that was enough teasing and it was time for mutual support and all that. ‘The fact that you are gay as well. That’s not much of a revelation either,’ she reassured, her smile warmer for being less ecstatic. ‘Come on, work beckons, we can swap stories about our love life over lunch.
